Confirm the plan before doing the prep
Check the agreed rooms, tasks, appointment details and access arrangements. If a room has become a storage area or a household schedule has changed, mention it before the visit. Preparation should make the agreed work possible, not add a second cleaning job to your week.
Ask whether any surfaces need to be cleared, whether an appliance must be empty and how pets should be managed. The useful instructions depend on the actual scope. Do not empty every cabinet or move furniture unless there is a reason to do so.
Clear a path and the working surfaces
Put loose items into their normal homes or a clearly designated place. Focus on walkways, floor areas and surfaces included in the clean. Dishes, clothing, toys and paperwork can block access even when the room itself is easy to clean.
Use a temporary basket if that helps, but avoid a frantic whole-house reorganization. Keep important documents, small valuables and fragile objects somewhere secure. This makes it clearer which items should be handled and which should be left alone.
Make a short priorities note
Write down the top few things you want addressed, along with rooms or objects that should not be touched. Include product restrictions or care instructions for special finishes. If a surface is already scratched, loose or damaged, flag it rather than hoping it will be obvious.
A short note is easier to use than a long message of equal-priority tasks. Distinguish essential work from nice-to-have additions. Ask about any new task before assuming it fits into the original appointment.
Arrange access and pets thoughtfully
Agree on how the visit begins and ends, who can answer a question, and any building instructions. Share entry information directly through an agreed channel. Do not place alarm codes, door codes or payment information in the public quote form.
If you have a pet, discuss where it will be comfortable and out of the working area. Keep an exit route clear and avoid surprising the visitor with an animal they were not told about. Pet handling is a separate responsibility from cleaning.
Leave the cleaning to the cleaning plan
You do not need to scrub the areas you have asked someone to clean. Instead, make them reachable and communicate honestly. If you cannot complete a preparation step, say so; that is more useful than delaying the conversation.
